Sheriff Dupnik 

  • Clarence W. Dupnik was appointed to the position of Pima County Sheriff in February of 1980, and has served seven consecutive four year terms since then.
  • His salery is currenty $89,225 per year but in January 2009 he will get  a raise to $100,824 annually.

  •  Dupnik, who was raised in Bisbee attended the  University of Arizona, but graduated from Keller Polygraph Institute in Chicago the Southern Police Institute at the University of Louisville, and the Urban Affairs Executive Institute at M.I.T. 
  •  Dupnik has been involved in local law enforcement for 50 years, joining the Tucson Police Department in 1958. In 1977 he left TPD to accept the position of Chief Deputy with the Pima County Sheriffs Department.

  • In his position of Pima County Sheriff Dupnik oversees more than 1,400 employees and hundreds of volunteers. The Pima County Police Department serves about 325,105 people in unincorporated Pima County which stretches over 9,241 square miles.
  • Since becoming the Pima County Sheriff Dupnik has introduced D.A.R.E. to Pima County elementary and junior high schools. He is also involved in the National Sheriff’s Association and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and he is an Arizona representative for Operation Alliance.

  • The mission of the Deparment is to ensure public safety through preventative patroling, public assistance, criminal investigations, and search and rescue; as well as detention services of those arrested and not charged with federal crimes in Pima County.

The Pima Coutny Sheriff could be used as a source for stories involving crimes, criminals, and public safety in Pima County. He could also be a good source for stories about drug trafficing in Arizona since he is part of Operation Alliance.

One issue involving te Pima County Sheriff is that he is going to go over his $111.4 million budget by about $2.1 million this year. This will be the 5th year in a row that he has overspent his budget.

Another issue current to this year is that it is election year for Pima County Sheriff.
